Chakri necklace - beige and cream
Featuring a handmade necklace from the brand, Paulami.
The main structure of this design is based upon coiling the thin beige and cream fabric dori. A lot of skill and precision is required in order to make the fabric doris (strings) thin. It involves a technique where first thin strips of fabric are cut diagonally, stitched and then turned inside out. The turning is the most tedious process and involves a lot of patience. The fabric used is poly silk and, sometimes, minute glass beads are also used to accentuate the piece.
The self-titled label, Paulami, began mainly as an initial idea of using Kantha embroidery on bags and accessories in a contemporary way. Whilst exploring ideas, several other crafts have also inspired and made their way into products.
A firm believer in sustainability and not being wasteful, the jewellery line was a result of effectively making use of the fabric leftovers that were collected after making bags. Paulami is currently training ladies from nearby slums who are very talented, yet, owing to their family duties, they are unable to hold regular jobs, and so this enables them to make a living by working from home.
